OBSERVATIONS ON HOW BRANDS INCORPORATE OUR SOLUTIONS
Creative Director at B+N
WHAT I LEARNED
Every strong brand has a unique personality, but they all value certain principles: organization, flexibility, easy adaptability at the store level, and a customizable system that aligns with their brand identity.
Architects, designers, and major brands worldwide have incorporated B+N systems into their own projects. In other cases, I’ve designed the entire environment myself, integrating our products seamlessly into the space. Here are just a few examples.
Everlane
B+N’ System 1224 is what keeps Everlane’s clothing and accessories neatly organized in its SoHo store. Leong Leong, the New York–based design team in charge of the project, could see that the system would easily accommodate the program’s requirements and the aesthetic vision of the retail company. Drawing inspiration from the International Style of architecture, which was typified by rectilinear forms and repeating modularity, System 1224 was the perfect specification for a 21st century brand that also uses minimalism to communicate our contemporary spin on modernity. Photography: Naho Kubota.
Comprising 15 to 20 basic parts, System 1224 can be reconfigured without the use of tools, allowing Everlane employees to change the store environment for seasonal campaigns or new merchandise quickly. The system also comes with LED wiring already in place, illuminating products and providing ambient light. Customization is no trouble either, so accommodating Everlane’s needs for a white, powder-coated steel support system and Baltic birch shelving was easy. Today, System 1224 can be found in all of Everlane’s stores.
We don’t want people to be able to pick out our system. It should seamlessly disappear into the fabric of the whole store, yet present itself to the consumer and owner in a manner that is flexible, shoppable, and aesthetically pleasing.
Before 1998, mid-century modern design was not well-known or well-regarded within the general public. Those who were in the know depended on interior designers’ specification perks, vintage stores, or inheritances to get their hands on an Eames lounge chair or a Noguchi lamp. Design Within Reach (DWR) brought these and other icons of design back into the limelight, and over the years has been a leading force in mid-century modern’s global renaissance (the brand is now owned by MillerKnoll).
DWR’s brick-and-mortar studios are intended to exemplify the exacting standards and ineffable aesthetic qualities that define mid-century modern design. Since 2011, DWR has worked with architecture studio DFA on several studios across the country. DFA turned to B+N early on in this partnership, asking for a custom display to showcase carpet samples. B+N designed a solution — a ladder-like shelving system with downward tilting trays for the samples — that saved space, flaunted the product, and fit into the studio’s overall look. DFA then specified B+N’s modular System 1224 to replace the custom millwork used in Lighting Gallery. Switching to System 1224 reduced tens of thousands of dollars in cost and eliminated hours of complicated installation time.
We started with one small ask from DFA and Design Within Reach, and it just snowballed from there into years-long partnership.

7 For All Mankind
In the dynamic world of fashion retail, creating an environment that seamlessly blends aesthetics with functionality is an art in itself. When the iconic luxury denim brand, 7 For All Mankind, embarked on redesigning their retail outlet at the Citadel shopping center in Commerce, California, they faced a unique challenge. The brand’s distinct European identity needed to be harmoniously woven into a fresh, cohesive concept that would captivate customers while staying true to their essence. Collaborating with B+N, this case study delves into the intricate challenges posed and the ingenious solutions devised to transform a conceptual vision into a vibrant reality. When HOK stepped in to design Shiseido Americas’ New York City headquarters, a vertical campus located in Midtown Manhattan, the biggest challenge was creating a sense of visual cohesion. There are 11 brands represented across eight floors in the building, so each brand’s area had to be both distinct and look similar to its neighbors. Photography: Eric Laignel.
To accomplish part of this goal, HOK turned to B+N’ System 1224 for the makeup giant’s conference rooms. LED-illuminated shelving spans the walls, providing a place for merchandise and other office decoration to be brilliantly displayed.

Fashionphile evolved from one woman’s eBay storefront selling the most lavish pre-owned designer handbags, shoes, and accessories in 1999 to a full-fledged ecommerce business a few years later to a brick-and-mortar retailer in 2008. When company founder Sarah Davis decided to launch
pop-up shops in Carlsbad Premium Outlets and Irvine Spectrum in 2023, the Fashionphile team commissioned B+N to supply appropriate modular retail merchandising solutions that express a consistent brand ethos aligned with Fashionphile’s New York and Carlsbad showrooms and to create an exceptional customer experience. The installation of System 1224 at Coty’s Headquarters epitomizes the brand’s vision of merging art, science, and innovation to redefine beauty standards. With its clinically-clean design and meticulous attention to detail, System 1224 reflects Coty’s commitment to precision and excellence.
By creating a space that seamlessly integrates functionality with aesthetics, the installation not only embodies the science behind Coty’s products but also captures the essence of the brand’s vision to inspire confidence and self-expression through beauty.
Planet 13 has taken a higher aesthetic with their cannabis store, becoming one of the largest and best-rated dispensaries in Las Vegas. The space is well over 100,000 square feet and appears, unsurprisingly, like nowhere on Earth. Taking some subtle cues from iconic retailers like Apple,
T-Square Studio used natural wood and integrated LEDs for the retail bays and product display cases on the main floor. To offset that warmth, the ceiling and walls are painted black and large, angular concrete pods arise from the main floor like some sort of alien geological feature. Photography: Thomas Story.
B+N’s System 1224, crafted in a three-dimensional cubist approach serves as the perfect embodiment of Aesop’s brand identity. Each store of Aesop is a unique and creative expression, and the cubist design approach aligns seamlessly with this ethos. By integrating geometric shapes and clean lines, System 1224 showcases a contemporary aesthetic that mirrors Aesop’s commitment to innovation and creativity. The blonde wood finish adds a touch of warmth and organic charm, creating a welcoming atmosphere that invites customers to explore and engage with the products on offer. Photography: Thomas Story.
Aesop’s stores are more than just retail spaces—they are destinations for product discovery and sensory experiences. With System 1224, Aesop continues to redefine the concept of retail design by providing a canvas which encourages flexibility and creativity. The incorporation of Infused Veneer and panels in brushed brass adds an extra layer of sophistication and luxury, making a bold statement that captures the essence of Aesop’s refined aesthetic.
In a seamless blend of tradition and modernity, Infused Veneer Panels, featuring a vintage Chinese playing card texture, perfectly complement the bold, saturated colors of Shanghai Tang stores. This design approach not only resonates with Shanghai Tang’s commitment to celebrating Chinese heritage but also reflects its forward-thinking approach, appealing to a diverse clientele seeking timeless elegance with a modern edge. With a Murad spa already in play in the Greater Los Angeles area and their products sold in various boutiques and high-end spas all over the United States and Canada, the Murad team or the company decided it was time to create their first official flagship store.
Murad is a skin care brand based on innovative scientific research, so it made sense to incorporate B+N’s groundbreaking System 1224 into the retail environment. A perfect match for the brand’s vision, System 1224 is used along an entire wall with a mix of shelving and cabinetry in the custom color Echo Wood. The paneling allows for custom magnetic graphics and shelf lips, with the ledges used to house targeted skin care products announced by category. A monitor is enclosed seamlessly within the paneling of System 1224, elevating the retail experience by allowing a stream of information to reach the customer directly. Photography: Thomas Story.
The flagship store is consistent with Murad’s inspirational mission, “Better Every Day”. The modular adaptability of the paneling system carries that promise into the environment, providing a tangible experience of the brand to customers.
